Sandhill Cranes bank as they approach the ponds of the Whitewater Draw wildlife conservation area in the afternoon. In 2008, a record number of Sandhill Cranes, over 30,000, were reported to be wintering in the Sulphur Springs Valley. Their abundance, and the amount of water in the ponds, made for fantastic birdwatching and bird photography!
