A Great Egret framed by branches of a snag gracefully balances on its perch. Normally, the hazy cloudy skies of Oregon are too bright and don't make a good background for a bird photograph, but a bright white bird makes it possible to get both exposed properly. This photograph was a finalist in the National Wildlife Refuge Association's 2005 photo contest.
